BENEFITING: Room To Read
EVENT DATE: Sep 30, 2013
Literacy is the cornerstone of all learning and fundamental for participation in today’s global society, yet 793 million people across the globe lack the ability to read and write. Of all the illiterate people in the world today, two-thirds are female and over 90 percent live in developing countries.
Room to Read envisions a world in which all children can pursue a quality education, reach their full potential and contribute to their community and the world.
True literacy requires practice, a good teacher and an environment where reading is both valued and displayed on a regular basis. In order to ensure that all children can achieve this, Room to Read implements four Literacy programs in Asia and Africa: School Libraries, School Construction, Reading and Writing Instruction, and Book Publishing. To date, Room to Read’s literacy programs have served more than seven million children, making our world infinitely more accessible for each of those children and their families.
Reading Materials: Room to Read ensures children are exposed to a variety of quality reading materials within a print-rich environment through sourcing and publishing children's books and developing instructional tools for teachers.
Learning Environments: We partner with communities to create safe, child-friendly school spaces by constructing classroom blocks that alleviate overcrowding and establishing libraries that encourage independent reading.
Teacher Training & Support: We provide teachers and librarians with professional development and on-site coaching so that they are equipped to support their students in learning to read.
Community & Government Partnerships: Room to Read fosters long-term sustainability by establishing community ownerships. We work directly with students, community leaders and local governments, all of whom contribute to a project's success.
Monitoring & Evaluation: Room to Read maintains program quality by emphasizing extensive research, monitoring and evaluation across all areas of operation.
With your support, we can achieve our goal of benefiting 10 million children by 2015 and inspire a new generation of readers.
