Help us train and develop grassroots leaders - and an unstoppable grassroots movement - to stop fracking and toxic forms of oil extraction in California.
On the heels of the historic ban on fracking in New York State, grassroots activists and leaders - coordinated by Rootskeeper - recently hosted 18 separate public facing events and got the word out about fracking and extreme extraction around the state of California. After getting tons of press at these events and witnessing the mounting momentum pushing towards a ban on fracking, we’re now moving on to the next steps. Can you help us keep growing the movement to ban fracking in the Golden State?
Here’s what we’ve got planned: In the coming months, we’re going to continue providing organizing trainings, and doing skills and power building with leaders around the state, developing the kind of grassroots power that can win critical fights against big industry - like the most recent fracking ban in New York. We’re developing a movement to move us off of dirty fossil fuels and towards a clean renewable energy economy - but we need your help!
More about us:
Our shared mission on August 1 was to show that Californians of all walks of life and many different regions were ready for Governor Jerry Brown to put a stop to fracking and other dangerous methods of extreme extraction. And that the people of this state are ready for a bold pathway to 100% clean energy in our communities.
Our leaders know that achieving those goals will take heart and perseverance, which they have. But to win they’ll also need a bunch of in-depth organizing skills that they don’t have yet. The Rootskeeper team is eager to offer them the trainings they’ll need to take the campaign against extreme extraction and for clean energy to the next level.
If we meet our fundraising goal, the Rootskeeper team is ready to identify, train, mentor, and connect this new tribe of grassroots leaders. These leaders will develop robust activist communities throughout the state, each of which will be autonomous and freestanding, but simultaneously connected to all the others, in order to coordinate and drive a statewide strategy. These groups and leaders will work closely with existing coalitions, and maintain a drumbeat of pressure in every county in California. We’ll gradually wear away at institutional and political resistance and build public consciousness and support through consistent political engagement.
More specifically, we will:
train these leaders on how to do effective citizen lobbying of elected officials.
work with them to develop powerful leadership teams in their areas, so they can grow a powerful local activist community.
give them the tools and assistance they need to become confident participants in our democratic system and make their voices heard.
teach them how to do responsible and effective direct action, if and when that kind of escalation is necessary
The recent victory of the anti-fracking movement in New York demonstrates how crucial grassroots power is if you want to beat the fossil fuel industry. There is a huge opportunity right now to stop extreme energy extraction in California, and get the state on a path to 100% renewable energy. But to seize this moment, we’ll need to encourage grassroots activism on a far greater scale than ever before.
We’re ready to develop these leaders, support the local groups they’ll form, and nurture the extensive cooperation that will be necessary between these groups and the existing network of anti-fracking organizations. Between us, we have years of organizing experience, and numerous contacts and friends throughout the non-profit, political, and public policy world. We’re excited by the opportunity for a major victory in California, which is not only the nation’s largest state, but the eighth largest economy in the world. We’re ready to build an unstoppable popular movement that will change the way this state produces and uses energy. Please help us get there.
