Cate was the only student in her 8th grade class to score over 300 points on her KCPE exam, and she has ranked consistently among the top ten students of her class each year at Daraja Academy. She studies hard and is an incredible leader. Her classmates look to her for a listening ear and for guidance to deal with their emotional and spiritual struggles.
Cate comes from a village just behind Daraja Academy where the river, 1km away, is their sole source of water. She lives in a traditional Turkana house made of mud and acacia branches with thatched roofing. She is the first in her family, and extended family, to attend secondary school. When asked about the importance of her education, she shared a story about an older cousin who was smart but couldn’t find the money to go to high school and ended up getting into some bad things and passing away.
Cate uses her cousin’s story as a driving force for her education and focuses on her dreams to become a doctor. She is a leader in her community, her family, and at Daraja.
The school administration knows they can count on Cate to do anything and she’ll get it done efficiently and quickly. She has earned a reputation among the staff as being dependable and always readily available to volunteer and lead by example.
