THE STORY:

The Ross Hearn Vocal Music Excellence Scholarship Fund is intended to support Derby High School graduates that wish to continue studying vocal music after graduation from DHS.  Ross Hearn taught vocal music at Derby High School for 32 years.  His impact on thousands of students, due to his passion for music and his high expectations, is immeasurable.  The lessons learned in Mr. Hearn's class were more than musical, they were life lessons.  To this day, Mr. Hearn meets former students who remember him and thank him for the positive impact he had on their lives.  Mr. Hearn also taught in Valley Center, Knoxville-Iowa, and Wichita North High School.

Mr. Hearn had a tremendous impact on my appreciation for good music. To this day I think of him every time I hear The Battle Hymn of the Republic. I remember how much emotion I felt when performing it with the Derby High School Philharmonic Choir. I have such fond memories choir, Chansonettes and Madrigals 1975 - 1978. I had the opportunity a few years ago to sing with the Derby Community Choir for one season. The first rehearsal I attended took me right back to those memories of a wonderful teacher. I hope all past students of Mr. Hearn are able to donate and support this wonderful gift of music education for a young person. 4 years ago

We met in Philharmonic Choir at Derby High School--Steve's dad, Ross, was the teacher. As students, we were challenged by Ross to strive for excellence in our music performances. As people, we have been inspired by Ross's resilience and passion for teaching--he has touched countless lives through music and we are proud to be part of his family. 4 years ago

So blessed to have been a member of Mr. Hearn's Philharmonic Choir, Chansonnettes and Madrigal groups. The 1976 Europe trip was amazing. I don't know many people that would have accepted the responsibility of taking 77 teenagers to a foreign country for three weeks but Mr. Hearn did and it was a gift of a lifetime! It was a privilege to have been taught by such an incredible person! 4 years ago
