Did you know that 1 in 236 people in the world are trapped in modern slavery? That’s 29.8 Million people. The Global slavery Index 2013 indicated that Thailand is ranked number 7 with 472,000 slaves. I am sure this is higher! Our names are Paige Honor and Heidi Wolff, and we are the incoming President and Professional Development Coordinator of Adelaide City Rotaract Club. We have recently come on board with New Zealand Rotary to aid them in Project Starfish. Project Starfish is focused on the Rescue Mission for Children Centre in Northern Thailand; a highly vulnerable group of minority tribal children who are at risk of human trafficking into the sex, labour and organ harvesting trade. The centre provides desperately needed schooling and accommodation for Akha Hill tribe children. The infrastructure at the Akha Academy was built more than fifteen years ago. This was enabled by the efforts of church and Rotary volunteer groups. The buildings are now in great need of some care and attention. One of the critical buildings at the centre is the kitchen. Over the years the kitchen has provided hundreds of thousands of meals to the Akha children residing at the centre. It has provided meals to young children who have never had a full belly or had proper nutrition. A new kitchen will not only continue this purpose but will be used to teach young and older kids basic kitchen safety and hygiene skills to take back to their villages. Once the kitchen is up we're only just beginning! The next step is to finish the rest of the school, especially the classrooms. We are asking you to help us with the first step of this amazing project.
