THE STORY:

The goal of the proposed trip is for the Rotaract Club of Claremont McKenna College to engage with children with disabilities as well as other disenfranchised groups in Costa Rica to improve their living and education standards. Students will work under the guidance of experienced workers as well as senior Costa Rica Rotary members to construct a pool, build a garden, renovate an old room for usage as a “changing room”, and build a new room for rehabilitation purposes at Escuela Centena Guel. Physical and mobility therapy has proven an essential and effective technique for improving the cognitive development -- as well as quality of life -- of children with special needs. This project will allow students to develop cross-cultural communication skills and strengthen their awareness of social responsibility in a global setting, as well as witness the importance of education and youth development. In spending the majority of their active hours immersed in this community interacting with its indigenous members, students will become more acquainted with issues involving global development challenges.
This trip is a continuation of the Rotaract of Claremont McKenna College’s commitment to international service. In the Spring of 2012, the Rotaract club worked with a local NGO in Panama called the Association for Neighbors in Casco Viejo (AVACA) to restore an after-school theater center in the Casco Viejo neighborhood, an area of the city facing increasing gang activity. The theater center now provides a safe and gang-free environment for the neighborhood’s school children.
