BENEFITING: NORTHWEST HARVEST
EVENT DATE: Nov 19, 2014
On November 19th, the Seattle Rotary Club will host a food drive for children. Your participation, and the participation of the club at large, will help Northwest Harvest distribute over 32 million pounds of healthy food statewide each year, serving over 370 hunger relief programs.
What does your donation mean? We can feed a family of three a healthy, nutritious meal for 67 cents. A gift of $10 will buy a child breakfast for a month. $50 buys 6 kids backpacks, each filled with enough nutritious take-home food to last a weekend. $100 buys 600 lbs of nutritious food, the equivalent of a healthy dinner for 15 months. $1,000 buys 15,000 lbs of apples, or over 1,000 nutritious lunches for a family of four.
As you may know, one in five Washington children are considered food insecure. Food-insecure children are 90% more likely to have fair or poor overall health than their food-secure friends.
What helps most? Food donations like peanut butter, box juices, cereal, fruit cups, macaroni and cheese, infant formula, canned meals, and granola bars are all great for children. Diapers - especially larger sizes like 4-6 for toddlers - are always welcomed. Financial donations allow Northwest Harvest to reach even more children in our community: a mere sixty-seven cents can feed a family of three one nutritious meal.
Hungry kids also can't learn, struggling with an inability to concentrate, poor academic performance, headaches and stomach aches and significant behavioral problems. One of the simplest ways to improve educational achievement is to ensure that no child goes hungry.
During the school year, Northwest Harvest provides food to over fifty public schools, offering nutritious, kid-friendly, supplemental food for children with limited food resources outside of school. In the summer months, the Northwest Harvest Kids Summer Food Club provides kid-friendly foods in high-need geographical areas. Our focus, year round, is on children’s nutrition and health.
