"Row for Peace" is cancelled
February 29, 2016
THIS PROJECT IS CANCELLED
Please submit no more donations on this specific fundraiser page. Due to lack of sponsorships, we regretfully had to cancel this project. February 14th entry on the Around-n-Over website provides the background information.
Our budget deficit was significant which was made whole by Erden Eruç. It simply is not possible to proceed with this project. We used the funds from this fundraiser for logistics and to prepare the rowboat and to load it with provisions for an ocean crossing.
Erden is looking for sponsorships in the USA for a new project. This new project will strictly have a conservation theme. Should he succeed, Erden will be able to establish new historic firsts and Guinness records. This will be the best way that Erden knows to return the favor to our donors, making them proud.
LAST YEAR'S PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Around-n-Over is a Seattle based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, with a mission to educate and to inspire the youth, instilling in them the values of selflessness, sacrifice and perseverance, and assisting poor communities in their struggle towards self-sufficiency.
This project is facilitated by AKUT, the premier Search and Rescue NGO in Turkey, providing logistical, communications and website support.
WHAT IS ROW FOR PEACE?
Erden Eruç and his team will row his two-person rowboat from North America to the Gallipoli Peninsula beginning in April 2016. This memorial challenge is conceived on the mutual respect and friendship that exists today between the people of Turkey, Australia and New Zealand.
Originally from Turkey, Seattle-based Erden Eruç initiated this project as a tribute row from New York to Gallipoli, to mark the centenary of the Gallipoli campaign during World War One. Australian (Kendon Glass) and British-Australian (Mark Gasson) will team up with Erden on this project, flying multiple flags to honor the shared sacrifice, to promote reconciliation and to emphasize the value of peace. Erden adds: “While we share our struggle on the high seas in our blog, we will also reflect on the meaning of this historical battle and how it culminated in much-needed peace and reconciliation among nations after such profound pain and loss.”
WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT
We do not have cash sponsors. Grassroots support is critical to deliver on our goals. In addition to funding this trip’s most essential expenses, your donations will support our NGO partner AKUT, the premier Search and Rescue NGO in Turkey.
Our journey will also promote DefenceCare which is a charity helping current and ex-serving members of the Australian Defence Force and their families in times of injury, illness and crisis. DefenceCare is managing the above linked Everyday Hero crowdfunding page dedicated to our Australian audience.
ABOUT ERDEN ERUÇ
Erden Eruç is the founder and President of Around-n-Over. He holds multiple Guinness records for his adventures, has helped numerous charity projects and led educational engagements. He holds the record for the longest time at sea for a solo ocean rower (312 days); he is the first person to have rowed the three major oceans and the first to have completed a solo circumnavigation of the globe by human power.
This project is facilitated by AKUT, the premier Search and Rescue NGO in Turkey. "AKUT is entirely a voluntary, non-governmental organization involved in searching, assisting and rescuing all who require aid within its authority and means, in mountain or other nature-related accidents, natural disasters and all other emergency conditions by means of trained, disciplined, high-standard personnel and equipment, passing on knowledge to society with no political affiliation."
AKUT is recognized by the United Nations International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG), the first and only Turkish team as such. A fully equipped and trained 20-person AKUT team was recently sent to Nepal the day after the earthquake hit. AKUT also trained civilian first responders from Syria who have saved thousands of lives in the civil war since.
Over the last two decades, AKUT energized the Turkish youth to volunteer their time to better respond to natural disasters. They have developed intitutional knowhow and trained their local teams with high retention rates. The professionalism displayed by this army of volunteers has made them qualified first-responders to both domestic and international disasters. AKUT volunteers are providing manhours and logistical support to make sure our project succeeds. Their US representative Barış Öztürk based in New York, is our project coordinator and an essential member of our team.
AKUT needs rescue gear and equipment to operate, hence this fundraising. We are setting the fundraising goal of this CrowdRise campaign at 200,000 USD. Our project budget is less than 150,000 USD. We will continue to seek cash sponsorships to cover this budget. Any proceeds that remain from the total amount raised from sponsorships and this fundraising, will benefit AKUT.
