THE STORY:

My Story

My name is Rose Kostak and I am a sophomore at Mountain Lakes High School. I am part of the Mountain Lakes Rowing Club, based in Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey and am the coxswain for a Mens Varsity Lightweight 8 boat. On May 11th, 2013, our boat qualified for the US Rowing Youth Nationals by .003 of a second. This is quite an achievement, considering 2 of the 8 rowers are affected by IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease). Rowing in and of itself is an extremely taxing sport that required not only physical, but mental toughness. I could not even imagine going through the demanding training with the added pain of IBD. The perseverance and spirit of all eight of my boys, and especially these two, make me proud to be their coxswain and honored to help them with this extremely worthwhile cause.

What is IBD?

IBD includes Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Crohns and UC are both lifelong diseases and are both genetic. Symptoms include constant cramping, stomach aches, diarrhea, so on and so forth. They are both auto-immune disease, so basically our immune systems are attacking ourselves. Scientists practically have no idea what causes it, and there is much to be discovered. There is no cure, but there are treatments. I, for one, am on Remicade, a bimonthly infusion treatment where I have to go into the hospital for about 3 hours with the medicine being pumped into my blood via IV. This medicine supresses my immune system, making it easier to contract other ailments.

Donations

Since the US Rowing National Championships is such a public event, I thought this would be a terrific platform to raise money and fight against IBD. Each donation will sponsor 20 meters of our final race at the National Championships in Tennessee. As far as donations go, I aim to raise 5000$. Therefore, I ask for about a minimum of 20$ per sponsorship ($1 per meter), but ANYTHING HELPS.  Lets conquer Crohns and Colitis one stroke at a time.

All proceeds will benefit the Crohns and Colitis Foundation of America.
