BENEFITING: ROW NEW YORK
ORGANIZER: ROW NEW YORK
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
On November 6th, I will be running the New York City Marathon in support of the non-profit organization Row New York. By pairing the competitive sport of rowing with rigorous academic support, Row New York empowers NYC’s under-resourced youth to build strength, gain confidence, and pursue excellence beyond their teen years.
After nine years of competitive rowing, I’ve come to appreciate the sport for so much more than just the athletic experience. With it came an overwhelming sense of community and camaraderie both on and off the water, and the constant appreciation for hard work. I’m running this marathon for Row New York because in my experience with the organization, I have seen how the rowing and academic programs truly change the lives of each young rower by providing that same sense of community and empowerment.
All fundraising efforts will go to strengthening Row New York’s empowerment programs, which, by the numbers include:
- The past six years in a row of medaled performances at the New York State Championships
- A high school graduation rate of 99% of Row New York youth, compared to 66% of New York City’s public school students
- A college matriculation rate of 98% of Row New York youth, the majority on scholarship, and many the first in their families to do so
- College success, with more than 93% of Row New York's youth staying on track to earn their college degree, compared to a national average of 53%
