Never stop dreaming
Running the Boston Marathon is now going to be a dream come true. I’m from Ecuador, and I came to the United States in 1993. After getting divorced and becoming a single mother, I was extremely challenged during the hardest time period of my life. I found myself alone in a country with no family or relatives to count on. I literately had both hands tied. I did not speak English, I did not drive, I lost my job and my landlord asked me and my daughter to move out.
I started running to release my anguish. Running gave me the strength and clarity to put my thoughts together that led me to the conclusion that in order to move forward in this society I must get a training certificate or degree. It was the fall of 2002 when I enrolled at Roxbury Community College (RCC) to take English classes. I was asked to write a paper about a hobby. I researched about running a marathon and wrote my paper on marathon running. I learned so much about marathon running that I have been dreaming ever since then about running the Boston Marathon. The marathon in the city I love!
I was so thrilled when the Director of Development, Alumni, and Foundation Affairs informed me that the Roxbury Community College Foundation was selected as an Official Charity of the Boston Marathon and received 15 Bibs. I was the first to volunteer to run. I was more than interested in just running because I love to run, but also to support and give back to the college that has given me so much. RCC has been my second home since day one as a student and now as my employer. I owe much to who I am today to RCC. Without the support from the faculty and some staff during my time as a student and after, I would not have been able to accomplish my goals. I came here just to take an English class, but ended up getting an Associate degree and then transferring to UMass Boston where I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in 2014.
I am asking you to please support me as a member of the Roxbury Community College Foundation Marathon Team. The Foundation provides support to RCC’s programs and projects including The Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center and Media Arts Center. Plus assisting students with scholarships that do not qualify for financial aid but still cannot afford the cost of their school expenses.
