I can’t help but remember that night in 2005 when a car accidentally hurled into me, breaking my femur into parts and damaging my hip bone and ligament .While lying on the ground and waiting for some help to come in my way , I lost sense of time . Only thing I did continue to feel, was a sharp agonizing pain. After a 4 hour surgery that followed, no one could say for sure if I could ever get back to a normal life. Eventually I did and I probably was very lucky .Gradually and very slowly I crawled back to a ‘normal’ life where I could walk again without any support but it was not same as before. My lifestyle became carefully measured , my confidence was all time low.
Today running for Boston Marathon 2017 feels like a dream and I still do not believe it. Even before my accident I never had a daily fitness goal. But today when I look back, it feels natural. I took up casual running after my daughter was born mostly to get back in shape and running seemed to be a better option which could be done with minimum investment. I continued to run with mostly little above the jogging speed and often used to walk when I was out of breath as there was no goal to meet. Gradually I started liking all the positive energy, the joy that daily one hour running brought to me. I started connecting to a deeper will which I never knew existed in me before. I started pushing the envelope by adding more miles into my daily run and finally gathered enough courage to start participating in races starting from 5K to complete a half marathon in 2016 and that was the time I wanted to run a full marathon and that too for Boston. I was fully aware that it won’t be easy physically but who loves easy? It is the human nature to fight all odds and try to come out as survivors. Without that, we are living dead.
Coming from a middle class family back in India, education was our top most priority. I have seen our parents making sacrifices for providing better education to children and I also did not learn to see it any other way. In 2012, I represented my corporate office for Citizen School’s STEM initiative and it was a transformational experience. It gave me an opportunity to teach middle school students in Roxbury, Boston for some time and I understood how important the job of a teacher is and how critical it is to ensure that everybody getting equal opportunity to learn. Only by providing a good balance between education and sports we, as adults can ensure our children are getting required help to become responsible and successful citizen.
