RRS Constituency Group
Organized by: Whitney Derber
EVENT DATE Jan 15, 2016
We have now signed our paperwork to become a constituency group to sponsor a lesbian Syrian couple that is presently living in Lebanon!
We have been introduced to a couple through a Syrian that arrived in September 2014 with his partner. He has been actively working in the the local community and advocating for refugees ever since his arrival, and is connected with the refugee community still awaiting sponsorship. We are feeling incredibly fortunate to have also partnered with Rainbow Refugee, and through their sponsorship agreement holder, United Church of Canada, to insure that there is a proper support network in place for the group and the couple.
As this route is different from other private sponsorship routes where we would support our sponsorship commitment through the financial records of group members, we now have to provide the majority of funding into trust before we can submit our joint paperwork. We have put together our settlement plan and basic budget, and don't believe that the basic minimum required by the government for sponsorship is an amount that can help a couple become secure and established in Vancouver. As a group, we are striving to provide the funding to allow them to feel secure and supported while they make the transition as new Canadian permanent residents. We don't want to delay this process anymore than absolutely necessary, so we are reaching out to our friends, family, and social network to help support our efforts.
The great benefit to our partnership with Rainbow Refugee and the United Church of Canada is that they provide tax receipts for all donations over $50.00. We will provide the names and mailing addresses of all donors over $50.00 to United Church of Canada (unless you would prefer to remain anonymous) to ensure that you receive a tax receipt.
We have had an incredible initial outpouring of support from our many friends, colleagues, and family members, and we thank you in advance for all of your support!
