Since its inception, the Youth Leadership Program of the Renaissance Training Institute, Inc. (RTIEL) has sponsored an essay contest with topics related to civil /voting rights and social justice. This year, the contest is available for eligible high school students in grades 9-12 in selected schools in Fort Worth, Texas (i.e., Eastern Hills, Dunbar, and O.D. Wyatt High Schools).
Each year students write essays to compete for college scholarships and an all-expense paid trip to visit to historic sites in the cities of Montgomery and Selma, Alabama and various youth summit activities hosted by the National Voting Rights Museum and Institute. The tour culminates with attendance at the 52nd Annual “Bloody Sunday” Re-enactment crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge (see http://www.nps.gov/nr/travel/civilrights/al4.htm).
In 2012, RTIEL sponsored 4 students and 2 chaperones on this trip with the 1st and 2nd place essay contest winners receiving $1000 and $500 in college scholarships respectively. In 2013, RTIEL sponsored 2 students and 1 chaperone on this trip and the students also received $1000 and $500 in college scholarships respectively. In 2014 and 2015, 4 students and 2 chaperones attended the trip and the winners also won scholarships.
This year, will mark the 5th year RTIEL has taken a group of students to Alabama, and we are asking your help to fund this life-change trip!
