Hi all you wonderful donors,…
Hi all you wonderful donors,
Here is a gift of Haiku about running and the Marathon in gratitude for all your support in helping to make this past fundraiser as successful as it was.
With fondness, Joe

10th St & Broadway
keeping time to Grace Church bells
Sunday morning run

breezy morning run
a tern circles an updraft
two winged soaring hearts

Friday morning run
Williamsburg Bridge train roars by
foot strikes disappear

early morning run
the bright Williamsburg Bridge lights
fade with the sunrise

an October run
with Medford Lakes spectators
witches and pumpkins

October morning
along the East River run
stars in a black sky

bright autumn morning
running westward on 10th St.
shadow leading on

stern faced runners pass
keeping pace till one smiles back
heart lifts with gladness

Battery Park run
memorial wreaths appear
embraced by stillness

South St. Seaport run
sighting masts of a tall ship
upward soaring heart

Queensboro Bridge run
headwind across East River
arms like sails lift up

open road, mind, heart
Statue of Liberty run
freedom embodied

on Marathon eve
sleep descends as racing thoughts
cross the finish line

the Ferry departs
runners line up for her shot
Lady Liberty

runners in corrals
a jumble of languages
cultural exchange

corralled energy
a medley of whoops & yelps
harkens the race start

Verrazano start
a sea of humanity
above the Harbor

Bedford & Myrtle
wife and son cheer arms outstretched
running hugs ensue

sign says “runner’s high
still legal in fifty states”
body politic

on Queensboro Bridge
Freedom Tower’s facade shines
runners’ photo - op

when spectators cheer
some shout out Stomp the Monster
thumbs up and a smile

bum knee acting up
a wish for self - compassion
helps soften the pain

daunting run ahead
family, friends & patients
inspire onward

jostling runners
evading a collision
steady each other

spectator lined streets
amongst smiles, waves, signs & cheers
kid’s high fives sparkle

past mile twenty three
weary runners, some walking
can hear “you got this”

leaden besieged legs
“punch this sign to power up”
lightness emerges

finish line looms large
just a few meters to go
eyes well up with tears

dream, heart, sweat & tears
New York City Marathon
quest intangible
