THE STORY:

Hi, friends!  The newest family member in the Ragan household is a wonderful Norwich Terrier / Australian Cattle dog named Ruby.   We wanted to tell you how we came up with our Pet Palooza team name - Ruby ROCKS for Have a Heart and also help you get to know this beautiful pup a bit more.  Ruby was pulled from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care and Control after she had been surrendered by her owner for reasons we do not know.  She had just turned three years old and was a shy but loving dog and I caught a glimpse of her while our wonderful shelter vet, Dr. Judi Vogt was doing her intake exam.  I saw her shaggy face and her Betty Davis eyes, petted her and walked back to my office.  Ruby, who they originally named "DRagan", after her first staff "fan" - me, was being walked back to the kennel and I heard someone say "her heartworm test came back positive."  My heart sank a little.  But I knew that thanks to HSC donors, a fund, the Have a Heart Medical Fund, would be there to help with her treatment and that she would surely be adopted.

A few days went by and I decided to bring her into my office for a break from the kennels as many of us do at HSC.  That was it for me ... her eyes, her personality and her crazy terrier antics had me.  She came home for an interaction with our other pups and it was like she belonged with us.   She fit.   She was home.    But we also knew that she had heartworm treatment to go through and it was going to be tough.

I'm so happy to share that RUBY has completed her treatment and is doing great!  A HUGE thank you to our wonderful shelter vet and vet techs and HSC's amazing staff that helped us through knowing what to do during her treatment and insuring all of our questions were answered.   But MOST importantly, thank you to the wonderful donors who  donate $10, $20, $50 ... whatever they can, do make this fund possible.   It's there for heartworm positive dogs ... for dogs/cats that have been injured ... for puppy mill rescues ... it's an emergency fund to help all of our animals.

Remember ... it only takes ONE mosquito bite.  http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/dog-care/dog-care-heartworm.aspx

Please help other dogs like Ruby receive the treatment they need - donate to our Pet Palooza 2013 fundraising page.  We thank you .... and Ruby thanks you.
