Rugs, and easels, and markers, OH MY!
Organized by: Raychel israel
Important update: While doing some further research, I found out that unfortauntely donations to an individual's fundraiser are not in fact tax-deductible. I apologize profusely for this confusion and of course understand if subsequent changes need to be made.
I’m about to embark on the most exciting and truly life changing adventure of my life. In two weeks I’ll begin my first year of teaching at an incredible school in a district just outside of Oakland. I will have my own class of curious, energetic, and inspiring first graders. The principal at my school is an extraordinary administrator whose emphasis is on educational equity. In a recent letter she referred to the teaching staff as “foot soldiers for equity.” The community we serve is wonderfully diverse and I am excited to celebrate and honor these many backgrounds in my classroom. Out of 300 students, 276 are designated as socioeconomically disadvantaged. As teachers, our job will be to emphasize not only academics but also social skills, creativity, and development of the child as a whole. We will also encourage our students’ families to be integral parts of the school community.
Our district has undertaken numerous initiatives and projects to better each school, but the reality is that we are seriously underfunded and we lack the means to outfit our classrooms with necessary supplies. This means for anything other than the basic supplies (paper, pencils, etc), we must pay out of our own pockets.
Classrooms are supposed to be magical places where learning comes to life through experiential learning opportunities. They should feel warm, but be bright and stimulating. Students should have access to materials that engage them in the curriculum. The classroom is also a special community where students must feel safe and comfortable taking risks. We are fortunate to have pencils and paper, absolutely, but imagine a classroom that also had bookshelves filled with books ready to be devoured, art supplies used to integrate the arts into the academic curriculum, journals to encourage creativity and writing, magnifying glasses and math manipulatives. A big bright carpet where we learn and build community covers the linoleum floor, and the walls are covered in student work. Unfortunately, a classroom outfitted with $100 worth of supplies provides students with very limited resources, which honestly just isn’t fair.
I want to do everything I can to create an environment where students are engaged, excited, and where learning thrives. But I won’t be able to do that without additional funding. Hopefully, through your donation, you can help me actualize my vision for my students by helping to fund much-needed items from the following list of supplies: a rug (that big, bright carpet); a teacher’s easel (where most of the lessons happen); age appropriate books to create an in-class library; composition books for writing; math and science tools; art materials like markers, crayons, colored pencils, pipe cleaners, colored paper, water colors, paint; other basic supplies like scissors, storage supplies, folders, and room décor to help create that warm, magical feeling.
This will be the first year in what I hope to be a long career of teaching young children. I will be able to use many of these supplies in years to come to create the “magical classroom” that I know will encourage my students to develop a love of learning and curiosity about the world in which they live.
I have created a separate bank account to ensure that any and all donations are used solely for the purpose of student/classroom/teaching related supplies and I will keep an accurate accounting of what I spend and where I spend it. Hopefully I will reach my fundraising goal. If I am fortunate enough to exceed it, that money will be used exclusively for other learning enhancing projects such as field trips, class gardens, technology, etc (none of which is funded by the school, unfortunately)
Below are links to some of the items I hope to purchase (Lakeshore products have a reputation for quality and durability). I have excluded materials life markers and other basic supplies from this list since I will get those in-store (better teacher deals!). Please do let me know if you would like your donation to go towards a specific item.
Any and all contributions will be wildly appreciated.
I really can’t thank you enough. Your donations will mean the world to me and my students.
Oh, and if you’re ever in the area, stop by and come be a guest reader!
