Stuff About Me:

I am pleased to join our Honorary Team Captain Barbara Morse Silva and my fellow co-captains, Chief John LaCross and Bryan Ganley, as we “Cross the Bridge to Hope” in the 2014 Citizens Bank Pell Bridge Run on October 26th in Newport RI.

As the immediate past president of The Samaritans of Rhode Island, I know first-hand that suicide know no boundaries and affects young and old, rich and poor. Suicide does not discriminate and affects all of our state’s 39 cities and towns.

Since 1977, the programs of The Samaritans – our Listening Line, Safe Place Grief Support Group, Youth and Teen Education and Community Education programs - have touched thousands of lives in so many ways.  In recent years, as the internet and social media play a larger role in how people learn about suicide prevention, The Samaritans has become a statewide leader in pointing Rhode Islanders in the direction of help and support. In 2013, we hosted more than 50,000 visitors to our website and are at nearly 2,000 Facebook friends.

At the heart of our work continues to be our volunteers, from college age to senior citizens, who befriend the hopeless on our listening line, provide nonjudgmental listening at our Safe Place Grief support group and at the Men’s Intake Center at the state prison, who staff tables at Teen Education programs and who provide invaluable services raising awareness to the general community. We literally wouldn’t be open with the help of our dedicated volunteers.  To them, I truly say thank you!

We also wouldn’t be open without the financial support of you, our fellow citizens.

By the very nature of our mission, we cannot charge for our volunteer led programs. We are not eligible for 3rd party government or insurance reimbursements. We must rely on the good will of our fellow family, friends and neighbors to maintain our programs and to enhance our efforts to continue to provide help to new generations of Rhode Islanders and their families.

Today, I am asking you to join me as we help Team Samaritans RI race to the finish line! We want to reach and exceed our $30,000 goal!

All gifts large and small will make a difference. Please don’t hesitate to give to honor or remember a loved one or friend. Please don’t hesitate to sign up and join us on October 26th.
