THE STORY: SUPPORT TEAM CAMP RUGGLES!
OUR 42st YEAR 1974-2016 Team Camp Ruggles "Run for a Summer Dream 2016 " at the CVS Health Downtown 5K To Benefit our George M. Jacques Campership Fund Established in 2009, The George M. Jacques Campership Fund honors the 38 years of service by our former Executive Director.
On the occasion of our 42st year, we ask that you join us - support us as Team Camp Ruggles runs the CVS Health Downtown 5K for Camp Ruggles, Rhode Island's only therapeutic summer day camp program exclusively dedicated to children ages 6-12 medically diagnosed with emotional and behavioral disabilities.
An early childhood scarred by poverty, violence, malnutrition, sexual abuse, poor prenatal care and more impacts upon the healthy development, physical growth and emotional well-being of children. This does not only happen in third world or war-torn countries but right here in Rhode Island. The results of early abuse and neglect are children diagnosed with a wide range of behavioral disorders exacerbated by sexual abuse, homelessness, and other psycho/social challenges.
Children with combined emotional, behavioral and cognitive disabilities experience even greater educational losses and behavioral setbacks than their peers; yet, mainstream camps are not equipped to serve them. In Rhode Island, Camp Ruggles fills that gap, creating a much-needed bridge between the end of one school year and the start of another for children whose documented problems are severe enough to require year-round support.
In today's world, forty-two years in service is a milestone many philanthropic organizations have not reached. We at Camp Ruggles would not have come this far without the help of our longtime, dedicated board, staff, volunteers and donors each of whom believes that every eligible child, no matter their life story, should have the opportunity to experience the joy of summer day camp.
To that end, throughout our history serving more than 2,520 campers, we have remained steadfast in our commitment to Rhode Island's most "at risk" children including those in state care or supervision as well as children from Rhode Island's urban core residing in low-income, single-parent families.
Camp Ruggles is accredited by the American Camping Association (ACA) and licensed by the state Departments of Education, Health and Human Services. Our comprehensive services include assessment, counseling, case management, recreation, transportation, breakfast, lunch and snacks for youngsters whose families and/or guardians rarely can contribute, even modestly, to camp fees.
More than 30 agencies, including school departments, group homes, Bradley and Hasbro children's hospitals, and mental health and human service agencies, make referrals. Thanks to annual philanthropic support, we are proud to say no qualified child has ever been turned away because of the inability to pay camper fees.
