When I spoke with Huyen about running the NYC Marathon this year we agreed that we wanted to do something bigger than ourselves. Many race the marathon distance for a variety of reasons. To test their limits, to check it off of their bucket list, to Boston qualify. Whatever the reason people take on this great feat to prove something to themselves. We wanted to run for girls. Throughout our journey to 26.2, we are fundraising for this amazing organization Girls Gotta Run to raise money for athletic scholarships for girls in Bekoji and Sodo, Ethiopia.
The athletic scholarships provide a new perspective for the girls to pursue greatness in running, academics and life. By donating, your money goes into the GGRF/CCL life skills program which will help them continue their education.
- The creation of a safe space like this running team reduces girls’ sense of isolation and increases their self-esteem and capacity to assert their right to choose when to marry.
- GGRF’s implementation of the life skills program co-developed by the Center for Creative Leadership, USAID and GGRF delivers crucial information to the girls through experiential learning modules on community service, leadership, creative expression, healthy relationships, HIV/AIDS, reproductive health and financial literacy.
- Education scholarships eliminate any financial restraints the girl and her family may face in keeping her enrolled in secondary school.
