BENEFITING: WAKE FOREST UNIVERSITY HEALTH SCIENCES
Cancer has become a dreaded diagnoses in many families and my family has not been untoched. I recently lost my grandfather last year to a rare central nervous system lymphoma. When he was first diagnosed, he was only given a year to live, but he beat the odds and lived three more years. Unfortunately, the cancer returned and he was re-diagnosed but he beat it once again. Sadly, the cancer returned with a vengenance and he died on December 12, 2016. He had all of his surgeries and treatments at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. During that time, he watched many children battle cancer. My grandfather was a kind, loving, giving, and generous man and he always kept his word. One of his wishes was to donate money to Baptist for research for his type of cancer and to help to find cures for children who were suffering from cancer. In addition, one of my cousins, Kathy, is currently battling leukemia. I am only fourteen years old but I have felt the devastation of the "Big C" diagnoses. As you can see, I have a desire to help raise money for cancer research in memory of my grandfather and in honor of Kathy.
