BENEFITING: The S.L.E. Lupus Foundation
EVENT DATE: Nov 03, 2013
If you told me 3 years ago, I would not only become a long distance runner, but fall in love with running, I would have laughed at the idea. I happily accept my commitment to running because when I am out there I am at peace. It reminds me that I am alive, it reminds me I am a lucky one.
Back in 2004 my lovely sister-in-law lost her battle with this disease. It was fustrating to see someone who I loved dearly go through so much pain. It was even more fustrating that in the modern world that we live in so little is known about Lupus.
My sister gave a good fight. She never let her situation bring her down. She was a loving mother of two, a wife, a sister to many and a beautiful human being. At the time I was 21 years old, still figuring out my life but wished there was something I could do.
I read a quote once about running that became something I would tell myself before every run, whether causal or timed. It says "I run because I can. When I get tired, I remember those who can't run. What they would give to have this simple gift I take for granted, and I run harder for them. I know they would do the same for me."
So for this 2013 NYC Marathon, I along with 2 of my best friends (Andrew Hadro and Alison Magistrali) whom have been with me through my entire journey will raise money to help those who have been dealt a tough hand with this disease.
It may be tough, it may be 26.2 miles, we may even get tired, but we will finish. And in the end I will know that this race wasn't just a race. It was to keep a memory of Yvonne "Bonnie" Oliver strong and always remembered.
This one's for you. RIP sister
