https://us.movember.com/ Movember is a great charity that has really grown through its efforts to fund cures for prostate and testicular cancer as well as treatments for men's mental health (the issue most important to me), a collection of conditions less tangible and less recognized or respected by the general population.
Please consider looking on their website and donating if you like what they do! I can update you on mileage (I am up to about 30-40 each week at this point) and the big day on October 18th.
I have never really run long distances or been a part of a running team, but I have always enjoyed running. For a while I have thrown running a marathon into the mix that is my ongoing bucket list, and as someone from Boston I always thought it would be Boylston Street that I ran to the finish line. However, as I found out (and some of you may already know), I need to qualify by running a 3:05:00 marathon, roughly a 7 minute mile pace for 26.2 miles. Before May I had never run more than 5 miles in a row.
Although I don’t have any personal ties to the people who suffered in the tragedy that hit the 2013 Boston Marathon, I still consider myself part of the Boston Strong and want to share in their pride and resilience. Therefore, I want to show my love for that community by not just stopping at the singular marathon that would satisfy my goal but instead qualifying for and eventually running the Boston Marathon. On October 18th, the rubber of my shoes will meet the roads of Lowell for the Baystate Marathon to try and accomplish this goal (http://baystatemarathon.com/). For kicks, I ran the Triple Threat (combined 1 mile, 5k, and half marathon race) in Rockport on August 2nd as well (http://www.yukanrun.com/TripleThreat.html), and I’m hoping this race will help me figure out if I can qualify (I ran a 1:34:47 in the half, so I believe I have given myself a chance at 3:05:00 for the marathon!). I don’t know how hard it will be to get to a 7 mile pace, but I’m hoping you all can help me get there.
