My name is Charissa (aka CJ) and this upcoming November I will be running my first ever marathon in NYC. I never considered myself a runner, or a long distance runner until on a whim I signed up for the Diva Half Marathon in Long Island back in 2014. I didn't know the first thing about training for a long distance run, yet 5 months later I found myself on the starting line with hundreds of women, and my parents on the sidelines cheering me on. With the sound of the whistle I crossed the starting line and began my trek on this incredible journey. I was lucky to get into the 2016 marathon by running 9 races and volunteering with the New York Road Runners throughout 2015. However, from my first half marathon I knew that I wanted to do something special to dedicate to my grandmother, Joan Arnow. Grandma Joanie was not a runner - in fact she got a C in gym in high school - but she was always a force to be reckoned with. Fearless, determined, and full of life, she always encouraged us to follow our dreams and to achieve whatever we set our mind out to do. She taught me a lot - how to parallel park, choosing grapes at the right peak of sweetness, and my first song on the piano, resulting in a life long love of music. My grandmother passed away in 2010 from a long bout with melanoma, but she embraced life with the sass of Elizabeth Taylor but the elegance of Grace Kelly. So as I begin my journey towards my first marathon, I've decided to set up a fundraiser for the Melanoma Research Foundation, a non profit organization "commited to the support of medical research in finding effective treatments and eventually a cure for melanoma". It is fitting that the 'Miles for Melanoma program began when founder Steve Farrell ran the NYC marathon to raise awareness for melanoma. Please help me reach my goal and follow along on my journey as I begin my training for November, in loving memory of one of the greatest women I've ever known. #Run4joanie
