BENEFITING: KIDNEY CANCER ASSOCIATION
EVENT DATE: Jul 27, 2014
Friends & Family;
I appreciate you taking the time to read about mom's story and my campaign to support her.
Most of you probably know mom as the lady with the camera and knitting bag sitting in the front row at virtually every baseball/basketball/soccer/lacrosse game from Fairfield to New Haven cheering with all she's got — a presence you can appreciate whether or not you've been featured on her blog (http://monicamcgrath.com) or gifted a hand-made pair of cashmere socks for Christmas. She is the heartbeat of our family, and pours everything she has into me and my three siblings with incomprehensible doses of selflessness and generosity.
In late May, we were shocked when mom was diagnosed with kidney cancer — a rarity for a woman as young as she. Yet mom has embraced the challenge with enviable fearlessness and ferocity. Although she knew it would mean a more difficult recovery, she opted for a more aggressive surgery to remove the tumor and still save as much of the organ has possible. Since the procedure in June, which was performed at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, she has worked relentlessly to surpass doctors’ prognoses for recovery. She is now walking comfortably in and out of the house, and her indelible sense of humor is as sharp as ever.
As a microscopic gesture to commend her perseverance and offer my own support, I'll be running a half marathon (13.1 miles) in her honor on July 27 at Mt. Killington, VT. To hopefully make an impact aiding her and other patients on the journey to beating this disease, I intend to raise some money for the Kidney Cancer Association, which aims to combat suffering and mortality from kidney cancer.
As I run for mom and the organizations saving her life, I ask for your support. Even the smallest financial contribution will make an incredible difference, and I would encourage you to pass the story along to a friend, family member, or colleague as we all keep mom’s journey in our thoughts and prayers. Please feel free to email me (pmcgrath at colgate dot edu) with any questions or comments. I truly appreciate your support and look forward to embarking on this campaign together.
