THE STORY:

Alyssa Shivers wrote -

Did you know that researchers have shown that being awake for 18 hours produces an impairment equal to a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .05, and .10 after 24 hours? .08 is considered legally drunk in the United States.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration conservatively estimates that 100,000 police-reported crashes are the direct result of driver fatigue each year.

Sleep deprivation increases the risk of sleep-related crashes. According to a study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, people who sleep six to seven hours a night are twice as likely to be involved in such a crash as those sleeping 8 hours or more, while people sleeping less than 5 hours increased their risk for to five times.

‘Drowsy Driving’ is something that I never even thought could or would happen to me. As a young adult you make sure not to drink and drive or get in the car with someone that has been drinking, but never do you think, wow, is that person tired?

I will be running my first half marathon this coming January, raising money for the Saint Charles Rehabilitation Center. In March 2011 I had fallen into part of the fatigued driving statistic, after being awake for 20 hours I fell asleep behind the wheel on my drive home from a night out with friends. I wish to commemorate the journey I was put on and all the progress that I have made by giving back to the place that gave me back so much.

After my car accident I was left with many serious injuries. I was in critical condition for my first week in the hospital after the accident and spent my second week recovering from my 3 surgeries. After being in Stony Brook University Hospital for those two weeks I was transferred to Saint Charles Rehabilitation Center where I would spend my next two weeks learning how to walk again as well as learning how to fend for myself in a wheel chair. Not only was I dealing with many physical obstacles that I need to work through, it was a very mentally draining situation as well.

I would not be as far from that situation today as I am if it was not for the amazing support and kindness from the whole staff at Saint Charles Rehabilitation Center. They gave me so much while I was there and I would love nothing more than to make a contribution back to them. It is a terrible situation for anyone who sustains terrible injuries, as well as for their families and it is comforting to know when your loved one is in that awful position that there are amazing individuals that give their lives to help your loved one.

If it was not for donations Saint Charles Rehabilitation Center wouldn’t have the opportunity to obtain new equipment and tools and other necessary things to give their patients the ability to have the best recovery possible. I would love it if you could help me reach my fundraising goal of $1,022 the amount of days it will be from my accident to the day of my first half marathon.

I appreciate all the love and support you have given me thus far and I would appreciate nothing more if you could continue to support me through this journey and give back to so many more families.

All my love,

Alyssa
