The love and support that the volunteers at the Ronald McDonald House provided for my boyfriend Ryan and his family in their time of need is just an example of why it is so important to support this wonderful home away from home. My team wants to give back to an organization who helped during one of the most difficult times of their lives. Our team will be raising money to support this non-profit organization and Samantha and I will be running the 2015 Akron Marathon in September to show our support. Please help us in our efforts and help celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Ronald McDonald House of Akron.
Please read below to hear Ryans story... just one of so many supported and loved by the Ronald McDonald House Volunteers.
I won't go into great detail but many of you may know my story. When I was 12 years old I was diagnosed with a life threating illness. After what I thought would be a quick day trip to Akron Childrens Hospital for tests in January of 1985 turned into a 3 month stay and a battle for my life. Not knowing much about the area or where my parents would stay we found out the Ronald McDonald House across the street had just opened their doors a week earlier. They took my family in with open arms. 29 years ago in a unfortunate turn of events we were very fortunate to be one of the first families to stay in the house.
My mom stayed the whole 3 months with just a couple trips back home while my dad and sister came back on weekends. It was as close to being home as you could ask for. On days when I could leave the hospital for a few hours I would go across the street to the RMH and usually just sleep, but just being somewhere like home with an unbelievable staff that donates their time and cares for you like you are part of their family made a world of difference.
My amazing girlfriend Kristin and friend Samantha will be running a full Marathon in Akron in September and all the money raised will be going to the Ronald Mcdonald House to help current and future families in need of a home away from home while their child recieves the care they need. There always seems to be a fundraiser or someone in need of a donation and lets face it, we would all be broke if we gave to every cause. Please consider a donation of any amount as I know first hand how important it is and the good it will be put towards. Thank you for your time, consideration and support for an amazing cause!
