I thought my 10th marathon would be my last, but I'm coming out of retirement to run my 11th next month. My mother passed away in December after a six-year battle with recurrent ovarian cancer at the age of 56. This one's for her - 11 was her favorite number.
In the past I've run for Boston Children's Hospital and Ronald McDonald House Charities raising tens of thousands of dollars for those causes. This time I'll be running for the charity my mother founded during her struggle with cancer - The Tiara Foundation Society (http://www.thetiarafoundation.org).
My mother, Tawna, was given a tiara while receiving treatment in Boston and recognized the power of something so simple to provide hope and support. She wrote, “It was as if I was a little girl again playing dress up or making believe that I was a Princess.” She founded the society to give single parents, like her, that same hope and support through educational grants and a community network.
The Society meets quarterly for social events and holds an annual gala with entertainment, dancing, and the presentation of their scholarship awards. Most, if not all members wear their tiaras to the events. And yes, I'll be wearing a tiara during the race.
Please join me and help raise funding the foundation needs to grow and expand while carrying on my mother's legacy.
