THE STORY:

The Corona Youth Music Project (CYMP) is raising funds to purchase violins and other orchestral instruments for the Corona Children's Orchestra.

The CYMP www.nucleocorona.org) was founded in 2010 in Corona (Queens, NY) to empower youth, fight poverty, and promote social inclusion through music education and performance. It is the first organization in Queens modeled on the Venezuelan conception of "El Sistema," a global movement of social action through music. It provides tuition-free opportunities for learning an instrument and playing in an orchestra 5 days per week.

The orchestra is the culmination of pre-orchestra programs that included children's chorus camps, "bucket band" and "paper orchestra" in collaboration with the Queens Museum of Art and other community organizations. It currently comprises about 30 string players, 5 brass, and 3 woodwinds that rehearse at least four times a week and perform once a month on average. For most members this was the first time they played real instruments.

Instruments are provided to the students on load, with no fees.
