BENEFITING: COASTAL HORIZONS CENTER INC
EVENT DATE: Mar 05, 2016
The NC Rainbow Run is an untimed 5K trail race taking place on Saturday, March 5th at Old River Farms in Burgaw, North Carolina. The run is organized by two high school students; Josefina Gordon and Irene Cho. All proceeds will benefit the Open House Youth Shelter of Coastal Horizons which is a center for homeless youth, including LGBT+ teens, in Wilmington, NC. The difference between our race and others is that ours is not about speed--it's about raising funds! Awards will be given for individuals and teams raising the most for the organizations that help LGBT+ youth.
Many LGBT+ students are at risk for homelessness and bullying. About 40% of homeless youth are LGBT+ even though they only make up about 10% of the overall youth population. Once homeless, LGBT+ youth are at far higher risks for victimization, suicide, sexual abuse, mental health problems, and being denied from shelters than their heterosexual counterparts.
The Open House is located in Wilmington, NC and is an emergency shelter for youth who are homeless, abused, neglected, or have run away. They provide support, counselling, food, clothing, and shelter to ensure the safety of homeless teens.
