BENEFITING: CHICAGO METROPOLITAN BATTERED WOMENS NETWORK
ORGANIZER: CHICAGO METROPOLITAN BATTERED WOMENS NETWORK
EVENT: 2015 Chicago Marathon
Hello and thank you for visiting my page!
My name is Mosum Shah and I've decided to run the Chicago Marathon for the Battered Women's Network's organization, "Run Domestic Violence Out of Town." The money raised from this campaign will be donated directly for domestic violence prevention and supportive services for its survivors.
Domestic violence is an incredibly sensitive issue, but one of increasing importance. These days, domestic violence is constantly in the news but is equally diminished in value and normalized.
Floyd Mayweather's systematic and constant abuse of his wife infront of his son didn't sway millions of viewers from tuning into his fight and putting money directly into his pockets, despite being sentenced to 90 days of jailtime. When allegations of Ray Rice's and Adrian Peterson's domestic violence surfaced, 20 million viewers still tuned in to watch the game between Pittsburgh and Baltimore. Moreover, despite graphic video showing Ray Rice beating his wife, the NFL has cleared Rice as a free-agent able to play. And lastly-desipte open allegations of sexual assault, Jameis Winston was still drafted as first pick in the 2015 draft.
These are just some instances on a high profile level.
Nearly 5 million everyday women experience domestic violence every year. 25% of women and 14% of men will experience domestic violence in their lifetimes. Beyond the emotional and physical trauma a woman must face, the economic cost is huge- domestic violence costs more than $37 billion a year in law enforcement involvement, legal work, medical and mental health treatment, and lost productivity at companies.
Which is why I'm running for these women. I'm running to help the women of Chicago lift themselves out of the constant cycle of depression, hurt, anger, and frustration. I truly hope you'll be able to support me support these mothers, sisters, daughters and friends.
As Coalition member Ava Newbart, Director of Development at Shalva, states, “domestic violence doesn’t discriminate: it’s an equal-opportunity destroyer of families throughout Chicago. It doesn’t matter if you’re Hispanic, Asian, Jewish, or Arabic, or whether you are rich or poor. We embrace our diversity and stand together because nobody should be afraid in their own home."
