BENEFITING: American Cancer Society
EVENT DATE: May 04, 2014
This year I am going to race in the Blue Cross Broad Street 10-Miler as a tribute to my dear friend, Anita Leggi, and her family.
In July of 2011, Anita was diagnosed with breast cancer that spread rapidly throughout her body. The ensuing months were extremely challenging as she underwent chemotherapy. Anita is a true matriarch and one of the most committed mothers that I have ever met. Despite her critical condition, she carried herself with a level of strength that was nothing short of inspirational. She has three boys (all of which are very close friends of mine) that she is utterly devoted to.
Later in 2011, while still battling her cancer, Anita saw her youngest son (Matteo) off to college. In November, they received the devastating diagnosis that Matteo had stage 4 non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Anita now had to not only battle her own cancer but fight for her son as well. After a truly heroic battle, collectively fought by the entire Leggi family, Matteo has fully recovered... while Anita continues to fight. You can read an article that the Press of Atlantic City wrote about their story here.
The way that the Leggi family has conducted themselves through this incredibly difficult time is magnificent. Their experience has motivated me to take on the difficult challenge of entering my first road race. My hope is that my participation in the event will serve as a celebration of a truly wonderful family and raise money for a worthy cause.
