We (Courtney & Bret Bowerman) are running the NYC Half Marathon on March 18. We're doing it for a lot of reasons but mostly for our daughter, Ellie Parker.
Just over 3 years ago, Ellie graced the world with her big, bold smile. Shortly after she was born, we were told she had Down syndrome, a genetic condition that leads to a variety of developmental challenges and impacts over 400,000 Americans. It was a big surprise for our family but now it's hard to imagine life any other way. In such a short time, our little girl has taught us so much...to be more patient and committed, to not sweat the small stuff and to cherish those everyday accomplishments. In fact, every time we get worn out training for this race, we're reminded how hard she works every day to run, jump, talk, color, you name it. They just don't make 'em any more determined than Ellie...
We're writing to ask you for your help in supporting an organization that Bret recently joined as a board member: the National Down Syndrome Congress. NDSC is a national non-profit organization that provides information, advocacy and support concerning all aspects of life for individuals with Down syndrome. Bret focuses his time on helping to influence public policy related to education, employment and funding for scientific research. In July, NDSC is sponsoring a "Day on the Hill" to raise awareness among members of Congress and advocate for recently introduced bills. The proceeds raised from our run will go directly to support NDSC's Day on the Hill. Learn more about NDSC at: www.ndsccenter.org
Thank you in advance for your support and generosity-- it means so much to me and even more to NDSC.
Hope to make you (and her) proud.
