Hello family, friends, well-wishers and probably some strangers,

Did you know that in the United States of America (based on a 2011 study), there are approximately 33.5 million adults and 16.7 million children that are living with food insecurity. In hindsight, according to Feeding America, 1 out of 6 people in America are hungry plagued, including 1 out of every 5 children.

For the many of you that know me well, you may know that I often ask, "Are you hungry?" It's always a nice gesture as well as a way out of a silent moment amongst one another. I am quite adamant about my peers and even strangers eating and I always try to make sure that they are stomach full to their abilities.

Long story short, over the past year, I’ve developed a better passion for running, thanks mostly to a slew of friends, especially that of a childhood friend, Marty Bernardo. I’ve kept a proud running streak of at least running 1 mile a day in 2013.

I don’t often enter races; I wanted to run the Chicago Marathon, but it was full. However, this Kettle Moraine Wisconsin race came up and I figured that I wanted to test myself to the highest degree by entering this 50 mile trail race, along with Marty and his brother Tim. Along with that, I wanted to try to become a better person by simply “running with a purpose”.

Granted, I don’t consider myself an elite runner and I’ll probably finish 2nd to last in this race, but I really wanted to do something special and give back to the land that has given so much to me. I’ve never done any Marathon races, as well as even a Half-Marathon, but I know that if my heart is in the right place, I know I can finish this one. What’s really going to make this special for me is that I’m running for a purpose: fighting hunger. It’ll give me a bigger push once I realize that I am not only running this race for myself, but I am also running this race for my peers and I am especially running this race for HUNGER.

I haven’t always been a charitable person, but from time to time, I like helping a good cause.

I want to run this race to benefit the Feeding America organization, because I know deep down that we can’t fix hunger in America, but we can simply make a difference, no matter how little or how big, no matter how close or how far.

Thank you.

Best regards,

Mark P. Garcia
