Everyone knows someone touched by cancer. We hope and pray that those who are diagnosed with cancer will receive the best treatment and care so that they can manage their illness and return to good health. As we know, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in NYC has been described as a leading facility that provides exceptional patient care, leading edge research and education. This past year, my cousin Ginger, age 41, was diagnosed with lung cancer. She is a wife and mom to her 6-year old son, Roman. While her initial treament at Sloan resulted in significant shrinkage of her inoperable tumor, Ginger continues chemotherapy every 3 weeks so that the tumor will not increase in size and that her cancer does not spread. She describes her caregivers at Sloan as "amazing" and appears to find comfort each day she has to share wiith them while receiving treatment.
So here's my wish...After getting in and deciding to run the 2012 NYC Half Marathon on March 18th, I wanted my training, effort and run to be more than just a run. I am running for Ginger and all those who walk through the doors at Sloan for consultation, treatment or education. Please join me in making a donation to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center so that the scientists, doctors, and patient caregivers may continue to benefit and in turn help ourselves or loved ones who rely on their knowledge and expertise.
To the cancer survivors that may be reading this and have touched my life as well as those around you, I am running for you too...your determination and resilience has been truly inspiring, incredibly motivating, and a constant reminder of the inner strength and will we find when faced with life's greatest challenge.
And to Ginge...NEVER STOP FIGHTING...this is for you...xoxo
