BENEFITING: KASIISI PROJECT INC
EVENT DATE: Mar 15, 2014
Hi everyone – we (Susan and Allison Rosenberg) are running the DC Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon this March to support scholarships to Ugandan students through the Kasiisi Project!
The Kasiisi Project, a nonprofit that works with rural primary schools (grades 1-7) in Western Uganda, has been providing scholarships to top performing students for the past 17 years so that they can attend secondary school (high school). Unlike school in US, and primary school in Uganda, quality secondary education is not free. At about $1000/year, it is often out of reach for children from rural areas, many of whose parents are subsistence farmers. For these students, higher education provides access to a job market that can dramatically improve their and their families’ living standards.
Since 1997, the Kasiisi Project has provided 123 students with scholarships to attend secondary school, as well as further schooling (including college-level medical, nursing, and teaching programs). Three of the sponsored students have attended Makerere University, the top university in Uganda, and one is currently at Harvard (see his article in the Huffington Post). A local committee checks up on the sponsored students regularly, making sure they are doing well in school and that they have all of the supplies they need.
For this program to continue, we need your help! The Kasiisi Project is in need of funds to pay for tuition for scholarship recipients, as well as school supplies and other incidentals the students need to be successful. Please see the breakdown below for an example of what different amounts can be used for. The bottom line: any amount can be helpful!
Allison worked with the Kasiisi Project in Uganda for seven months in 2013. She had a wonderful time and was impressed by the dedication of the local staff. Please see the Kasiisi Project website for more information about the organization, and you can direct any questions to Allison at email@example.com.
Thank you so much for your support!
