BENEFITING: Polar Bears International
EVENT DATE: Sep 08, 2013
Hi my name is Harley Merrigan and I'll be participating in the London Half Marathon this September to raise money for Polar Bears International, the world’s leading polar bear conservation group. I hope that by doing this event I can help raise awareness of the plight of polar bears, in hope that people will take action to help preserve these majestic creatures.
You may or may not be aware that the extent and duration of the annual sea ice in the Arctic has significantly reduced due to global warming. Polar bears are sea-ice-dependent species, they require sea ice to hunt their seal prey which sustains them when times are lean. Without the sea ice polar bears are unable to reach their prey. And with the extent and duration of the annual sea ice in many parts of the Arctic having already significantly changed due to warming temperatures, polar bears are facing limited time to access food sources and denning areas, both which are imperative for the species survival. This is resulting in lower cub survival rates and there has already been a 22% decline in the Western Hudson Bay population since the 1980s.
By sponsoring me you will not only enable Polar Bears International to carry on their vital efforts of helping to protect polar bears via their research and educational programs, but you will also become part of polar bear conservation.
ABOUT POLAR BEARS INTERNATIONAL:
Polar Bears International (who started as Polar Bears Alive) have solely focused their efforts on caring for polar bears since 1992. Since 2002 (when Polar Bears Alive was transformed into Polar Bears International) they have become a hugely inspiring conservation group who now have a worldwide impact. With a team full of committed individuals their work is scientifically gathered, fact based and is recognised around the globe. In 2012 their chief scientist, Dr. Steven C. Amstrup was awarded the Indianapolis Prize, the world’s leading award for animal conservation.
Anything you can give will be hugely appreciated, whether it be small or big.
A BIG thank you to those that already have donated and those who plan on doing so. Your generosity means a huge amount to me as I hope to one day be able to join others in protecting polar bears.
