BENEFITING: Minnesota Medical Foundation
The Reach Out and Read Program
at the Community University Health Care Center (CUHCC)
Located in the Phillips neighborhood of Minneapolis, CUHCC provides medical, dental, and mental health care to an ethnically diverse, low-income, urban neighborhood population. Opened in 1966, CUHCC has a long history of providing care to underserved and vulnerable patients and families, with a mission of seeking health equity in our community by advancing the well-being of diverse people.
Home visits have found that many families at CUHCC have few if any books in their homes. Through the Reach Out and Read Program at CUHCC, infants and children receive age-appropriate books at clinic visits. Research has shown that this program increases family reading with children and improves children’s language skills.
Giving a book to my patients is one of my very favorite parts of the visit. There's nothing like the smile on the face of a child when she's told that she really does get to keep the new book! Funds raised will be used to replenish the clinic's dwindling supply of books to give out to families.
