My name is Gabrielle Karlovich, and I am one of the 2015 BRInj’s summer undergraduate research students. I am a rising pre-med junior at Cornell University, and my major is called Human Biology, Health and Society.
This summer at BRInj, I worked on a project with nine other undergraduates studying Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC), an intestinal disease that affects mostly premature infants. My group worked on preliminary research that attempted to isolate and test different anti-inflammatory components in breast milk on our in-vitro NEC model.
As a former graduate of the Morristown NICU, I was thrilled to get the opportunity to contribute to research in a field that holds such personal significance. While I loved further exploring the clinical aspects of the program- doing literature reviews to truly understand the hypothesized pathology behind NEC- being exposed to a professional lab setting and actually doing the lab work really opened up my eyes as to how researching medicine and practicing it go hand in hand.
To show my commitment to the summer program, I’ll be staying active during the whole month of August in our "Run for Research" fundraiser. Our team is obviously running, but due to bilateral knee injurees, I've decided to do pull-ups instead of tracking miles. My personal goal is to do 1000 pull-ups in 5 weeks (50 pull-ups= 1 mile), and raise $500. As of August 17th, I have done 450. You could sponsor me per repetition, or donate a flat amount. Every dollar counts!
Please join me to reach and perhaps even exceed our goal! Your donation will support research initiatives at BRInj in neonatology and neurological diseases as well as helping secure future Summer Research Programs for both undergraduates and high school students. Words cannot express how grateful I was to have this opportunity, and it would mean the world to me to see that others can follow in our footsteps.
I will be so grateful if you could help me support this cause!
