THE STORY:

The Rock Club Rock For Vets wrote -

Fifth Annual Run For Rock For Vets at the Race on Base Fundraiser and Participants.

The Rock Club Rock for Vets mission is to create music instruction and education programs for our nations Veterans and At-risk youth, who are struggling with social adjustment and mental health issues. We are a grass roots organization. California Registered 501C3 46-0601534.

The Rock For Vets (RFV) Music Education Program was established in 2010 and commenced at the Veterans Healthcare System Long Beach, Ca. RFV is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives and well-being of disabled military Veterans in the greater Long Beach and surrounding areas through music instruction and education, one on one mentoring and life skill coaching. Through music instruction Veterans from the Vietnam War, Desert Storm, Iraq, and Afghanistan who suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Spinal Cord, Brain Injury and other emotional and physical traumas find that involvement in the RFV program reduces stress, improves their quality of life and begins the healing process by engaging with other Veterans.  They reap the rewards of the small successes they experience while learning to perform as part of a band.

The objective of RFV are:

1:  Veterans will learn how to play music, sing and fully participate in a music therapy program designed to improve their mental health, well-being and interpersonal skills as measured by improved relationships with family and friends and an ability to become further engaged in society.

2:  Rock for Vets participants perform at numerous venues utilizing not only their newly acquired musical skills but also by empowering the ability to remove the barriers that have kept them from fully participating in their daily lives and society.

3.  Through mentoring, musical coaching and group dynamics, as measured by our participants  being less inclined to engage in destructive life habits, drugs and alcohol and improve self-esteem and interpersonal, communication and socialization skills.

II.  At-Risk Youth The Rock Club (TRC) After School Music Program is designed specifically for Jordan Plus High School, a last chance alternative high school launched to aid in credit recovery for students who have fallen behind in traditional high schools.  Jordan Plus has 500 diverse, severe at risk, students.  Along with a credit recovery component, the staff is working hard to build programs that develop character, a sense of teamwork and self-esteem.  Twenty students were chosen to join TRC music program due to various social symptoms leading to angry outbursts, consistent truancy, defiance of rules and isolative behaviors.  TRC is one of many the programs implemented along with multiple disciplines, leading to student success.
