BENEFITING: American Foundation for Suicide Prevention
EVENT: 2014 ASICS LA Marathon
EVENT DATE: Mar 09, 2014
On Sunday, March 9th 2014 I will be lacing up my running shoes and running in honor of Samantha Wopat, a loving sister, daughter, teammate, and friend. I will be running the Los Angeles Marathon to raise money for The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, who is exclusively dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research, education and advocacy, and to reaching out to people with mental disorders and those impacted by suicide.
Sam has inspired me, her family, and countless friends to live full and meaningful lives. I was lucky enough to be Sam’s teammate on the Stanford Women’s Volleyball team and can attest that her smile, her words, and the way she listened made her family, friends, teammates, and anyone who was lucky enough to meet her, feel cherished and loved. Sam spread kindness through her smile, empathy by always being there to listen to a friend or a teammate in need, and joy through her infectious and vivacious laugh.
Everyone who knew Sam misses those moments, her smile and laughter, her kindness and touch. Sam taught all of us deep love and compassion for each other and we are better people because we knew her.
Depression does not discriminate by age, gender, ethnicity, or socio-economic status. It takes our sisters, our brothers, our parents, children and significant others. Through your support, you will be helping the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention fund research aimed at improving our understanding of suicide and ways to prevent it, as well as educational programs to increase awareness about prevention, warning signs and the psychiatric illnesses that can lead to suicide.
Thank you in advance for your generous support!
