BENEFITING: BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF NEW JERSEY INC
EVENT DATE: Aug 15, 2014
Hi! My name is Charlotte Masucci and I am participating in the second annual Run for Tomorrow's Cure. I am so excited to run with my fellow interns for such a great cause!
In Alzheimer’s disease, a small protein known as amyloid-beta accumulates in excess in the brain causing neuronal death. Decreasing the levels of this protein could be an effective treatment for Alzheimer’s disease. Using live cells, Charlotte is screening natural plant extracts for molecules that can lower the production of the small protein. Among the thousands of compounds that each plant produces, Charlotte hopes to find one that can be further developed into a medication for Alzheimer’s disease.
I do not know exactly what I wish to do after college, but this internship has broadened my view of the fields of science and medicine. All the knowledge I have gained thus far has shown me just how much more I have to learn. The scientists here have helped me understand how many different paths I can explore to find where my passion lies. I cannot wait!
