Friends, Hockey Fans and Countrymen. Lend me your support!
And while you’re at it - please open your wallets and donate a little money (or better yet, a LOT of money) to a truly amazing organization. If you do, I will run 26.2 miles (42.16 km) for you with all my heart at the Boston Marathon on April 21, 2014. Deal? Deal!
A Little About Me
Well, hi there. I'm Jennifer Gove. Many of you may already know that I hail originally from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. (Coincidentally, this is also home to Johnny Boychuck, which should prove extremely impressive to you if you’re a Bruins fan. Edmonton is also home to the Oilers, which should prove hugely impressive to absolutely everyone else on the planet. Or maybe only 28% of you. It could go either way, really).
This is my first marathon. I’m excited beyond words. And truthfully - I’m also scared. But what’s a little fear and pain when getting into the ring with your Life’s Must-Do List, right? I’m also immensely honored to raise awareness and funding for Lovin’ Spoonfuls, because this organization simply rocks. So now that my story (and the topic of hockey) is sufficiently covered, let’s talk about them.
A Little About Lovin' Spoonfuls
Lovin’ Spoonfuls is an organization that facilitates the recovery and distribution of healthy, perishable food that would otherwise be discarded. Lovin’ Spoonfuls works efficiently to deliver this food directly to the community organizations and resources where it can have the greatest impact. Lovin’ Spoonfuls is committed to addressing the health, environmental and economic impact that food waste has on our community. Headquartered in Boston, MA, Lovin’ Spoonfuls is a 501c3, non-profit organization.
So here's the thing. I told the fine folks at Lovin' Spoonfuls that I would raise them $5000 to allow me the opportunity to run the Boston Marathon. I also told them ALL about you - how brilliant, witty, genuine, beautiful, handsome, talented, successful and generous you all were. They said, "Well, that sounds promising, Jen. Please tell them all about us and let's watch the money roll in". The way I see it, the benefits are quadruple-fold. Food that would otherwise go wasted is rescued. Hungry people get fed. I get to achieve a meaningful, personal goal and YOU, my friends - get that warm, fuzzy feeling for helping a friend AND some pretty kick-ass good karma to boot. See? It's win-win-win-win all around.
A Little More About Me
Before moving to the U.S., I lived and worked in Dubai for several years, followed by a couple of years in Shanghai and then Toronto. (No, I didn’t have to wear a burka in Dubai, yes I do speak a little Mandarin (for real!), and - my love for Toronto aside - I most certainly do not cheer for the Leafs). My job has taken me on many fun adventures throughout Asia, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and back home to North America. During these travels I met incredible people and have made inspirational, lifelong friends. These people are you.
I moved to Boston 18 months ago and fell instantly in love with this stalwart city with so much heart. The tragic bombings and aftermath of the 2013 Boston Marathon inspired me to run my first 1/2 marathon at Boston’s Run To Remember. I loved the experience so much I signed up and ran the New Hampshire Applefest 1/2 marathon a few months later. Both experiences were incredible. Training to run those races was hard work, but the incremental victories and lessons learned along the way made way for exhilarating and powerful personal revelations. Which brings me to this moment today.
Running a marathon - the Boston Marathon - will be an immensely personal and meaningful journey for me. By donating today, you will be a part of this journey, and I can’t thank you enough for helping make that happen. But I’ll say it plenty anyway.
Thank You So Much.
