My journey with migraines started in third grade, although we didn't know what to call it at the time. In the past twelve years, I have seen countless neurologists, had every scan and test imaginable, and tried nearly every drug on the market. I've spent far too many hours in the emergency room, infusion center, and in bed. At one of the lowest point a couple years ago, I was sure I was just going to live the rest of my life in constant pain. Every day seemed equally awful or worse than the day before, and the never ending cycle of migraine - rebound headache continued. Three years ago, I decided to take up running again - something I had done in high school but not much afterwards. I started small, running a 5K or a 10K here and there, and then jumped to a half marathon. I was hooked. I started a running streak in 2014 and committed to running at least one mile every day, regardless of how I was feeling. I found that on my worst days, when the pain was so bad I couldn't open my eyes, running seemed to help. It didn't cure the migraine, but I felt .... BETTER. So I stuck with it. Three years later, I've completed multiple half marathons (some through a lot of pain) a full marathon, and a 50K trail ultra. When the opportunity arose to run the NYC Marathon and raise money for an amazing cause that hits so close to home, I jumped at it. Not only am I running to prove that migraine sufferers CAN still have quality of life, but I am running for an organization determined to fund the best researchers out there to help find causes and treatments for migraines. Please join me in supporting the Migraine Research Foundation and my quest to kick some migraine-butt at the NYC Marathon!
