BENEFITING: WORCESTER ANIMAL RESCUE LEAGUE
EVENT DATE: Jun 05, 2011
It all started with a text from my wife's brother. "Hey Mick, half marathon in Worcester June 5th" (http://www.usrahm.com/Events/worcester.htm)
It was late at night and I decided to run my mouth letting him know that I could beat him in a race or any activity for that matter. Keep in mind - Ryan Billings has completed several marathons, a half, and a FULL IRON MAN!
As I woke up the next day I remembered my boasting and bragging and said, "Crap, now I have to run a half-marathon!"
And so it begins - I've been training for one week now with 17 weeks to go. My first run was for 1 mile - just under 11 minutes. I need to be able to run 13.1 miles and my goal is to finish in under 2 hours. I realized from the start that I have a long road ahead of me. I am making progress slowly but surely each and every day.
I decided that if I am going to punish myself over the next 18 weeks, I might as well try to help someone out in the process. If you know me, then you know I love animals. I am a grown man with 3 cats...yes, I am the crazy cat man.- 2 of which I rescued from a shelter, the 3rd was a ferral cat I rescued from my back yard!
I want to use this oppurtunity to bring awareness to the WORCESTER ANIMAL RESCUE LEAGUE. There are a lot of animals in the Worcester area that need our help! WARL is a non-profit shelter which helps thousands of animals every year. Any and all donations, no matter how big or small will be greatly appreciated and put to good use.
The Worcester Animal Rescue League was founded in 1912 by a group of women determined to save overworked and abused farm horses. Almost a full century later, their love for animals and the struggle to rescue pets from abuse, neglect, and inhumane treatment continues. WARL is a private, non-profit organization and does not receive any county, state, or federal funding. Our facility relies heavily on the generosity of donors and volunteers.
The Worcester Animal Rescue League serves 17 communities surrounding Worcester, Massachusetts. Services provided include lost and found, boarding, adoptions, spay/neuter/ & vaccine clinics, educational programs, and volunteer opportunities.
The Worcester Animal Rescue League has grown into the largest animal shelter in Central Massachusetts. The Worcester Animal Rescue League is a limited intake shelter, taking in pets only when enough kennel space is available. The professional staff at the Worcester Animal Rescue League performs temperament and medical evaluations on each pet before adoption. The Worcester Animal Rescue League does not believe in time or space limits for our adoptable pets, and uses every resource available to place each pet.
Over 3500 cats, dogs, kittens, and puppies are successfully cared for each year. Abandoned animals with treatable yet expensive veterinary needs, that may have been humanely put to sleep in years past, are given a second chance by receiving the medical treatment they need and deserve.
Together, we make a difference
