EVENT DATE Nov 30, 2016
The situation in Haiti was already dire after the devastated 2010 earthquake and now with the addition of the ravage caused by Hurricane Matthew, the situation has gotten even worse. In total, the UN estimates that more than one million people have been affected and more than 350,000 are in immediate need of assistance. Honestly, we don't even know how many died. But, there are numbers floating out there between 500 to 900 are deceased so far. Even though the storm has passed, the work to get the people back on their feet will go on for a long time. LGH Marathon has worked in Haiti since 2013 organizing running events around the country but, has never responded to major disasters there. This time, we decided to get involved because the running community asked us to do so. With damage to homes and serious flooding in various parts of the country, there is a very severe risk of a rise in people getting cholera and other infectious diseases. The lethal water-borne disease killed over 10,000 people after the devastating earthquake in 2010 that claimed over 300,000 lives. LGH Marathon will be headed to Haiti in the coming days to offer on the ground help and working alongside our various partners to provide desperately needed emergency relief efforts and aid to our human family throughout the country. Along with your monetary donations, you can also donate tangible goods; hygiene kits, emergency aid kits, Emergency food, water, clothes, shoes, tarps, rope, flashlights & basic supplies for sustaining well-being. Please, send your tangible goods to the following address: LGH Marathon / Relief 52 Stewart St. Bayshore, NY 11706.
