In celebration of Immigrant Heritage Month this June, we will raise funds for low-income and vulnerable populations by supporting health care services provided by the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center. The Health Center had significant impact on both of our lives. Coming from an immigrant background, our families are the beneficiaries of the Health Center.
About Bonnie: I can always recall the days when I was my mom’s little helper at the Health Center. Working at the Administrative Department, she would bring me along to help sort out these colorful tabs and folders. These visits eventually opened up many learning opportunities at the Health Center, as a young participant at the Teen Resource Center learning about self esteem and sexual health, an intern at the Project AHEAD program engaging with the immigrant community, and now a Health Educator at the Health Ed Department creating content and materials that our patients and audience can relate to. Although I later realized that sorting out those colorful tabs and folders was indeed filing, I am grateful to now play a larger role in the work that impacts our immigrant community.
About Joe: When I moved to New York at the age of 5, I had my first annual checkup at CBWCHC, and I still see my doctor here till this day. I am glad that I have continued this relationship with the Health Center and ended up being a Teen Health Educator at the Teen Resource Center. I must admit that working and being a patient can be awkward at times. There are moments where I have lunch with the doctor who knows my body more than I do. However, it is these moments that I have with the other staff that makes this Health Center special; the constant nagging of eating more vegetables from the nutritionist, the little jokes about protective sex, and the positive remarks of maturing throughout the years among others. CBWCHC have provided me a second home and a place where I feel comfortable and proud of being Chinese-American.
Through your generous donations, we hope that the Health Center continues to touch the hearts of more immigrant families and individuals seeking for culturally relevant and high quality care. Please join us in supporting the Health Center.
