As some of you may have heard, I will be running my first marathon this summer: the Missoula Marathon! My training is officially underway, and I want to take a second to reflect on why I want to run a marathon in the first place. I was lucky to be born into quite an athletic family. My mom still runs or bikes almost every day and has run multiple half and full marathons. My dad was the same. And so when I decided to run my first half marathon two years ago, he was especially over the moon. It was like his running genes were finally expressing themselves, and he could not be more excited. After I ran that half marathon, he would call me and say, "You know, you're almost there. You could run a marathon in a few weeks if you wanted." I just laughed it off because being able to run 13 miles does not mean I can readily run 26. But he was persistent. And even after I told him numerous times that I didn't think I was ready for a marathon just yet, he still insisted that I would change my mind, run the Chicago Marathon that fall, and he and my mom would fly up there to cheer me on. He even took those few days off just in case. But of course that never happened. What you may not know about my dad is that he ran the Chicago Marathon multiple times. In his last Chicago Marathon, however, he collapsed at mile 20. He had to be resuscitated by his best friend, who luckily was a cardiologist and who happened to be running the race with him. He was very lucky he survived that incident, and once he fully recovered from the heart surgeries that followed, he made sure to take full advantage of his health by running and biking constantly. So after I lost him a year and a half ago, I promised myself that I would run a marathon for us. Because he never got to see it and because he would be so stinkin proud. And because I know I am ready to do it. So, if you have made it this far through my story, I would like to make a request of you. Help keep me motivated through the inevitable snowy days in April and the 20 mile long run. Be my sponsor. Every donation will support the American Heart Association and honor my dad. Thank you so much. Juliet
