Friends and Family,
I have been a supporter of Safe Haven Ministries for many years. They serve women and children whose lives have been turned upside down due to domestic violence. Nearly 1 in 3 women has been slapped, pushed, or shoved by an intimate partner at some point in her lifetime. This translates to approximately 36.2 million women in the United States.
I am one of those women.
It is something that I have only shared with those that are very close to me but I have felt a "nudge" over the past couple years to open up about my experience. Sharing my story is very difficult for me because of the shame I have felt for so many years. Shame from not being strong enough to "walk away". Shame of being a victim. Shame of all of it... The reality of domestic violence is that many times it starts gradually-you don't fold the towels the "right" way, you don't know how to fix something so you are told how stupid you are, etc. Pretty soon you have no self confidence and you agree that you are stupid and do everything wrong. Many times that is when more physical violence begins. You "allow" it because you deserve it! Of course this wrong and dangerous thinking but when you are in it, you can't see that, plus you don't think that you could ever make it on your own. My violence started slowly and escalated to the point of being held hostage, overnight, with a knife to my neck and a whole lot in between.
By the grace of God, I survived that night and I was given the strength to reach out for help! It has taken years for me to deal with these issues and I continue to struggle with self confidence at times, but I know that I have a unique position to help others and now is the time to do that.
Safe Haven Ministries walks alongside women and children and helps them navigate this horrible road of domestic violence! Please consider a donation to Safe Haven. 90% of your donation goes directly to helping the women and children.
If you are unable to give financially, please pray for all those affected by the horrors of domestic violence.
Thank you so much! Kris
