THE STORY:

Hey everyone, My name is Abby Billups and I'm running the Chicago Marathon on October 8, 2017. This year I've chosen to run and raise funds for my favorite youth program, Urban Warriors.

A little bit about the program:
Urban Warriors is a program of the YMCA of Metro Chicago's Youth Safety and Violence Prevention initiative (YSVP). Urban Warriors provides a structured curriculum-based program, that pairs experienced veterans with youth exposed to violence in some of Chicago's most dangerous neighborhoods. These two groups share common life experiences–surviving in hostile environments and striving to cope. Together they discuss and process their experiences with violence, develop and share coping skills, and identify the strengths they have developed and how they can channel them to benefit their communities. This trauma-informed approach fosters a unique supportive relationship between military veterans and youth.

Why I'm raising funds:
I was introduced to Urban Warriors through a classmate in my MSW program who thought I would be a perfect intern/mentor. She encouraged me to apply and I ended up getting the internship and then becoming a mentor for the first female cohort (alongside with several other kind-hearted, beautiful, women Veterans) During that time, I was struggling with being a new mother and being a student. My supervisor and fellow mentors were patient with me, and even though I was there to help the youth, the youth helped me in more ways than I could imagine. They welcomed my son with open arms (he was 6 months when I started bringing him to group) and gave me something to look forward to every week. As the weeks progressed, we faced our struggles and became closer as a cohort. The young ladies in our group really made our time spent with them, worthwhile. This program is truly one of a kind. In an effort to continue the work that the YMCA staff have put all of their hard work into, I am running to raise money to donate to the program so it can continue successfully.
